New Berlin Cultural Institution…

Being Berlin-based, we are always on the lookout for cultural landmarks and places to send our visitors. Well, there is a new museum that we imagine will quickly make its way to the top of the list of must-see places… the Currywurst Museum!

While the currywurst may not be so well-known outside of Germany, it should be noted that the country annually consumes approx 800million of the deed-fried sausages smothered with a combo of ketchup and curry powder.

An array of interactive exhibits guide visitors along a ’sauce trail’ through the history and variety of the beloved dish that has worldwide connoisseurs and even inspired a song by German musician, Herbert Groenemeyer.

Info about museum describes… “Guests can climb inside a currywurst van, slice and prepare their own computer generated offerings against the clock and watch Grace Lee’s 22 minute documentary film, “Best of the Wurst” (2004). A spice chamber scents the air with curry powder as guests relax on the giant ’sauce sofa’, shaped like a squirt of ketchup while an eco-alley assesses the environmental impact of fast food. Tickets cost between seven and 11 euros ($15.70) and the museum expects about 350,000 visitors annually. Merchandise ranges from kitchenware to cuddly currywursts retailing at 29.90 euros.”

World´s best Cities to Eat… 8 out of 10 ain´t bad!

Forbes recently finished their ranking of the top 10 cities in the world to eat well and we were pleased to see the results. With Design Hotel member is 8 of the 10 cities, it is safe to say that our guests can satisfy not only their appetites for design, but also their appetites for good food!  Read the full article here and see our hotels in each city below!

Paris

Rome

Tokyo

Mexico City

Barcelona

Madrid

Hongkong

Beijing

Milan

Shanghai

“The list is derived from the 2009 Anholt-GfK Roper City Brands Index, released in June. It surveyed 10,000 people from 20 countries–each chosen for geographic and economic diversity–in April of this year. It asked them to rank 50 cities on such varied subjects as climate, physical attractiveness, restaurants and nightlife. Cities were judged on lifestyle, buzz, multiculturalism and attractiveness.

To determine which cities were most-closely associated with good food, respondents were asked to look at a list of subjects–including food–and indicate which ones they would find interesting in the city. Cities with the highest number of respondents saying “yes” to the subject “food” ranked highest.

Formerly known as the Anholt City Brands Index, the survey was started in 2005 by Simon Anholt, who works as an independent adviser to 20 national, regional and city governments on brand strategy and public diplomacy. In 2009 he joined forces with New York-headquartered market research firm GfK Roper to create a new report that included more respondents from non-European countries, as well as a mix of respondents from both developed and developing countries.”

SPOTTED BY DESIGN HOTELS: DO YOU READ ME?!

Do you Read Me?! is one of our favorite shops in Berlin. It is home to one of the most impressively extensive magazine selections in the world for those interested in art, design, current events, literature or fashion. Built by designer Mark Kiessling and Jessica Reitz, the shop is located in one of the cultural centers of Berlin´s Mitte district nestled among a number of galleries and cozy cafes on Auguststrasse. DYRM is perfect for spending a Saturday afternoon browsing the titles ranging from Form, to Architectural Digest, to Monocle to many many more interesting magazines you have probably never heard of. Additionally, the staff of the shop are among the nicest and most helpful in the city- perfect for hesitant browsers who may not know exactly what they are looking for.

Reality Revisited Exhibit, Stockholm

We are pleased to have our friends at the Hotel Skeppsholmen from one of Stockholm´s most beautiful islands as a new contributor for Travel Diaries! The sent is some images and info about a fantastic exhibit currently taking place at their neighbor, the Modern Museum of Art, called Reality Revisited.

“This exhibition features more than 300 photographs from the 1970s, by some 80 photographers hailing mainly from the USA and Sweden. It gives us a look into diverse realities, personalities and narratives on life and art. The featured photographers represent classic black-and-white photography, but they have used various ways to develop their own expressive style.”

I managed to get some images of our new hotel opening in Munich next month, the Louis Hotel. It is located right in the heart of Munich at the Viktualienmarkt so you are just a short stroll to the Glockenspiel and the Hoffbrauhaus.

We will post more info closer to the opening!
